The start of the New Year has brought significant changes in the energy market, with oil prices surging to multi-month highs and gasoline prices climbing nationwide. According to GasBuddy data, the national average price for a gallon of gasoline increased by 5.6 cents over the past week, reaching $3.03 per gallon. This marks a 3.0 cent rise from a month ago, though it remains 2.9 cents lower than the same period last year. Diesel prices have also risen slightly, up 1.5 cents to $3.488 per gallon.
Gasoline prices have shown steady increases across the country, with the most common prices ranging between $2.79 and $3.19 per gallon. The median price has risen to $2.97 per gallon, up 8 cents from the previous week. The top 10% of stations average $4.13 per gallon, while the bottom 10% average $2.48 per gallon.
Diesel prices remain consistent, with the median price at $3.39 per gallon. The top 10% of stations average $4.30 per gallon, while the bottom 10% average $2.91 per gallon. Notable increases were observed in Delaware (+11.6¢), South Carolina (+11.5¢), and New Jersey (+10.5¢).
Crude oil prices have surged, driven by optimism surrounding China’s economic policy shifts. WTI crude reached $74.11 per barrel, up significantly from last week’s $70.55, while Brent crude rose to $76.71 per barrel. This price surge is bolstered by declining U.S. oil inventories, which have dropped 1.2 million barrels in the past week and now lag the five-year average by over 20 million barrels.
GasBuddy’s 2025 Fuel Outlook predicts continued gradual increases in fuel prices. Seasonal factors, including the switch to summer-blend gasoline, are expected to push prices higher starting mid-to-late February, lasting through spring. Tight inventory levels are likely to exacerbate these seasonal price hikes.
Motorists should anticipate higher fuel costs in the weeks ahead. Tracking local prices and utilizing apps like GasBuddy can help consumers find the best deals at the pump. With the energy market poised for continued volatility, staying informed is crucial.
